An exchange students typical saturday in Taipei

by Sander Tams 26. December 2009 16:33

Allow me to be a little achronological again today. I'll get back to the stuff I missed the past week.

Went for some karaoke again today. A big KTV hotel it was. As you can see, all my friends are rotaract now.

 DSC05664

A bunch of strange stuff was going on that I didn't get too deep into as I am still not exactly fluent in Chinese. Seems like fun though. I heard lots of "不要不要!", when the guy had to kiss a girl on the cheek.

We sang a bunch of songs, mostly chinese. Surprisingly many english songs were available, but surprisingly many of them are some that I've never heard of. I could sing as many as was needed though, which were not many, as others were quite eager to sing chinese.

Later I went with some of my older homies from rotary to an expensive japanese restaurant in Sheraton Taipei Hotel that I walk by every day when I go to school. It's appareantly a much bigger place than it looks like from the main street. Got lots of large stuff I didn't take pictures of unfortunately.

But I did manage to snap a few pics of the food there. It doesn't look as good as it tastes, actually. A meal almost interely consisting of raw fish, miso soup and other stuff that your stomach can accept really easy. Too bad it's overly expensive, otherwise I could go there instead of eating lunch at school 10mins away.

Japanese green tea and japanese 'alcohol', also known as sake, (in chinese it's not called wine, it's just alcohol. For example red alcohol, beer alcohol, apple alcohol...)

Finally, saw this when I got home. Then I smiled, took a bath, wrote a blogpost and went to bed.

Eating seafood in Bali

by Sander Tams 9. October 2009 18:08

Today, I went a trip to the opposite border across the river from Danshuei. There, in Bali, we ate a bunch of seafood with Joni's rotary club.
Although before we started our fish gluttony in the evening (which was not super big although still more than usual), we went for a walk and ate other stuff by the harbor and later went to see Shi-san Hang Museum of Archaeology.

Danshuei is on the other side.

That's oyster omelette. I had one before already, but it was not really good, because the restaurant barely put any egg in it. This one was way better. Try it.

Karaoke in Taiwan - KTV

by Sander Tams 27. September 2009 17:25

Earlier this week, I went to a KTV for the first time. This was last tuesday, where I was busy with writing about that wicked trip around Taiwan with all the old peeps.

So in this post I'll try to write short about karaoke here in Taiwan.

A KTV is actually a kind of karaoke bar, where you rent a room for yourselve instead of singing with a bunch of old peeps you don't know.
Since no-body's looking and you can make all the noise or sing as bad as you want without getting angry stares, the KTV's are more popular amongst the young people here. If you go to a karaoke bar, you'll be more likely to meet a bunch of old and mostly single people looking out for a date or just liking to sing old songs.

At the KTV there's a bunch of nice stuffs for controlling the song that is playing. You can - of course - pick your own song with a remote control, and then you can manage the songs a little better with a touchscreen that Joni is currently operating. Opposed to just karaokeing at some party or bar, you can also edit the tempo and pitch.

But KTV is not just for singing.
There's usually also all-you-eat buffet plus you can order cold beer so you won't run out of energy from several hours of singing. Don't expect the buffet to be too big if you're going to one of the cheaper places though.

Also: There's usually not a lot of english songs to pick from if you don't know a lot of oldies and then a few newer songs that were very popular in Taiwan some years ago, so before you go there, you should probably find out if you know some of the beatles, abba, the carpenters or other old stuff like that. (Michael Jackson stuff can usually work aswell.) If you're planning to go to a Holiday KTV, you should click the above pic to get a larger version in which you can get some suggestions for songs you can train. Atleast I know that this quite famous song is probably something you can find in most places.

Hey, this one is a much shorter blogpost than the other.
I hope you had a nice week. Good night.

On tour with the rotary club 2

by Sander Tams 21. September 2009 19:06

So today I will be continuing from yesterday.

This is when the real bragging will come, so here you are: The luxurious resort I stayed at, although just for one night:

 DSC02083

This is the entrance to the hotel we stayed at. I looked at some of the papers I got about the trip. They were all in chinese, so I wouldn't know much from them, but I think the rooms there were a little expensive, even for danish standards.

 DSC02057

The more impressive thing about this place is the giant leisure area they have. Really, just look at it. Unfortunately for me, I had such a good nights sleep that I didn't have time to go for a walk in the morning, so I didn't get to see too much of it. (There's a lot more than what you can just see from here.)

This big house was used for dinner by the whole rotary crew, which was actually people from both Banciao Odense and their sister-club plus a lot of wifes, relatives and friends of the members from the two clubs.

Well, not just dinner, actually. Rather a feast with a lot of wine and whisky and accompanying drunk taiwanese people running around and giving out toasts to everyone. And then, of course, karaoke.

Don't worry. It takes more than two bottoms-ups challenges to make me even just tipsy. Lol. Oh, and of course the video is one I shot myself this time.

The next day, we had a very nice breakfast in the fine resort.

Here, I found another cake, that showed up to actually be sweet.

But oh... So late it becomes again. This blogging is really hard. I'll have to finish it tomorrow I think. By then, I probably know a little more about karaoke too.

Ming tien chien. See you tomorrow.

On tour with the rotary club

by Sander Tams 20. September 2009 16:47

I just spended my whole weekend driving around with the rotary crew all of a sudden. An unforgettable experience I must say. Let me explain to you why.

First of all, Taiwanese people are crazy about karaoke. So when I got onto the tourbus and took my seat, I suddently found out that the vehicle was a driving karaoke bar. Unfortunately for me, my seat was just on top of the subwoofer.

This was not the only television, as you can see on the follow picture, the whole bus was pretty well equipped:

There were also a few very old english songs. I tried to sing Last Christmas with Joni, but the idiots who made the music for the karaoke-track on that one couldn't hold the rythm so we failed pretty bad. Just afterwards, we took another song, which is far superior: Sting and the Police with Every Breath You Take, and the whole bus applauded noisily when it was done. I think I did so-so, but of course that doesn't matter when it's the first time the people hear the famous white-haired european sing karaoke.

Okay, a lot of pictures are going to be in this post, so prevent it from being too spammy, I'm going to break it up here. Click into it to read on, really! More...
