Zunavi Ad Exchange

by Sander Tams 10. July 2010 20:06

I've been trying a number of ways to drive a little bit of new traffic to my page boonbot.com. Decided on searching the web a bit for websites offering free advertisement in exchange for having their ad put on your site, thus creating a network of people sharing ads. There's a number of possibilities but it's not a very big business it seems. I couldn't find any page that seemed really professional about it.

Many of them have some crazy return ratio such that you'll have to display two ads for every one time you can have your displayed somewhere. At a few of them, it's more fair, but none of those I have tried were any good. Some networks will display almost as many of your ads as you've displayed of theirs but wont drive traffic your way. I have been displaying ads from the service "Spottt" for a while now. I have shown 117 ads and generated 5 clicks in a few days. My ad was shown 90 times and not clicked once and many of the sites I seem to be exchanging with are placing their ads in places where visitors will rarely see them, and that's even against the rules of the service. It also matches me up with a bunch of totally unrelated sites. I write about culture, food and travel and it puts up ads for websites on how to take care of your dog or fish.

So I have decided to try it out myself. Since it doesn't seem like there is any good big website for creating a decent free advertisement exchange network, I might as well try it out. Not that I expect great things of it, but if I can get it rolling, it might be fun.

I put up a website on my old domain zunavi.dk (don't go there, it might be broken.)
It's on the subdomain http://ads.zunavi.dk where you can find the website. I just made it in a few days so it's not aesthetically pleasing and needs a lot of features, but I made it work fine and put up ads on my website boonbot.com.

Here, I'll put up an ad unit here and you can see it:

If you think it sounds interesting and want in, go see if you can figure out how to use it and be welcome to write me some feedback here on my blog. Link below:

My Kafkaesque life

I think the best way to promote your blog is by commenting on other blogs. That's how I started. I made friends and I have a small "gang" of people who would always comment on my blog. Then there's a lot of silent readers, who never comment, but seem to check out my blog daily. Then there's websites and forums who started to link to my posts. Good content is most important and I think you have great content. I was always the type of blogger, who read other blogs and commented. And slowly people started to comment back. A year ago I had 25 unique visits a day. Today it's usually 500 a day, on a good day is 700 and my record is nearly 1000. And it's getting more and more, it's like going viral, I don't even need to try hard like tweeting and promoting, people find me and promote my posts without my influence. That's what I always wanted as a blogger. I don't need 50 comments on a post, I rather see people enjoy reading my stuff, old or new, I don't mind. Then I feel I give something and receive something. It's a fun hobby, I like it Smile

I agree. Making friendships with other bloggers are probably the best and most efficient way not only to get more traffic but also become a better blogger. And you can better avoid people who just try to abuse blogs and other websites.
But you need those first few people to start coming often and promote stuff first, right? It's not often I bump into some blog that I feel I can relate much with. Usually I'll just read it if it's interesting but I usually won't comment unless I really feel like I have something I want to say. I don't want to intrude or make people feel that I'm just commenting to get traffic.
I've had just a few people link to my page, but been blogging for one year so I am starting to wonder if people have any chance of finding me in the first place.
If I could make it easier for newcoming bloggers to get some startup exposure, (and I could use a little of that too,) then I think it would be great. I'll just have to figure out some way that I can get more honest people to participate and not have the thing flooded with cheaters and lousy blogs with barely any content.

I'm also starting up something on boonbot.com soon with others blogging there than just me. Actually I like programming and "making stuff automatic" just as much as writing content.

My Kafkaesque life

Well, a big part of liking a blog is liking the blogger. In my case, I'm very open to follow all kinds of blogs, from political to make-up. Some of these Asian female make-up bloggers are quite funny and we tease each other a lot in comments. I sometimes write nonsense, then some other time I would write a serious post and then I get opinions from all kinds of people, from Asians to Europeans to Americans. That's my way of blogging and it works pretty well for me. So, if you're niche blogger, you need to find people who are interested in that particular niche, such as Taiwan or Denmark... Maybe you have more silent readers, who don't comment. How many daily visits does your blog have?
And it always starts by commenting randomly on some blogs and you slowly develop relationships with other bloggers. If you're honest, then nobody will think you're just trying to get traffic. There are some bloggers, who never bother to reply to you or interact. I usually comment once and then never again. Some others are pretty active and interact well. But it comes down to personality and how much time one has. For me, reading blogs is part of my daily routine. Goes well with coffee Smile Wish you all the best for the future. I'm gonna read you, so you have 1 good follower ;)

I tried out your link, however I'm not very good with stuff like that. XD

I don't know if I've commented on your blog before, but I've watched it for a long time. I'm going to Taiwan through the same program, and you're the top blogger for Taiwan through rotary. Your blog is useful to me because it's not outdated and it covers what I'm going to be doing. I also don't find your blog dry like I find some others.

I've linked a few of my friends to your blog a couple times to show them things I was talking about with Taiwan.

Because of you, I'm going into Taiwan much more prepared than I would have been.

Please note that I now do most of my blogging on Boonbot.com. There, you can also find many photos that I take. Try and have a look at my post about Taipei Game Show 2010 or my posts about Computex. My little article on a few of my favourite Taiwanese Foods has also gotten quite popular.
